Description

Western Reserve Land Conservancy is working to honor Oberlin’s rich history in the anti-slavery movement and united fight for liberty by planting a bird-friendly Underground Railroad Freedom Garden at Western Reserve Land Conservancy’s 60 acre property on Hamilton Street, a portion of which was owned by John and Delilah Copeland;  John being a former slave. John and Delilah’s son, John Anthony Copeland, took part in the Wellington Rescue and also took part in the fateful raid at Harpers Ferry. The garden will be adjacent to restored prairie land and will feature native trees, shrubs, and plants that may have played a role in the lives of enslaved people who travelled north looking for their freedom. The planting will take place on Sunday, April 28 from 1-4pm.  The property is located on Hamilton Street, just west of the bike path and the Oberlin Recreation Complex.  Park at the Recreation Complex across from Lincoln Street and walk west toward the Right of Way/Bike path. Refreshments will be provided. Please wear sturdy shoes. We are partnering with Black River Audubon and a variety of other organization on this project.  Native wildflower seeds will be distributed.
