Volunteer: MLK Day of Service Field Trip

We are bringing back MLK Day of Service!

MLK Day of Service is a national day of volunteer action that takes place on Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday in January, encouraging Americans to volunteer and improve their communities. It is the only federal holiday designated as a day of service, transforming it from a day off into a "day on" to honor Dr. King's legacy through community service. We are celebrating the friday before the nationally recognized day.

Come join us on Jan 16th from 10am-5pm for a day packed with reflection, community engagement, and great food!

Want to join? Respond to this need

The day will start with a quick check in at the Bonner Center

Then, we will be getting brunch at EDWINS! Brunch is paid for by Bonner

EDWINS Leadership & Restaurant Institute is a 501(c)(3) organization that offers formerly incarcerated adults a foundation in the culinary and hospitality industries and a support network necessary for long-term success. Today, EDWINS has grown to include not only its flagship fine dining restaurant at Nighttown but also a Butcher Shop, Bakery, and EDWINS Too—a culinary incubator, community kitchen, event, and makers’ space. The Institute graduates 75 students a year, many of whom gain employment in dining establishments across the country.

After lunch we will do some community service!!

We will be doing service in Cleveland, though. The service location will be announced soon. Community service is going to be something that appeals to everyone. It is not major-specific.

OberlinKids is a kindergarten readiness collaborative made up of over 30 partner organizations that have come together to develop solutions to ensure all children in Oberlin enter school healthy and ready to learn. Our programming targets families with children from birth to five. One of the best ways to volunteer for OberlinKids is to help the facilitator in the OberlinKids Community Classroom located inside the Oberlin Engagement & Activities Center (36 S. Prospect St., Oberlin). We offer daily drop-in playgroups for families to come and learn through play with their children and to meet other families with young children. If you have a special skill, play an instrument, or have age-appropriate interests you would be willing to share with children and families please reach out to discuss your ideas.  Other volunteer opportunities vary including assisting at community events, creating marketing materials and resource sheets using Canva or other programs, social media marketing support, and other opportunities.  If you are interested in volunteering for OberlinKids please contact Jenn Keathley at jkeathley@oberlinkids.org.
