WHO WE ARE

A group of Oberlin College students (~6) and individuals incarcerated at Grafton Correctional Institution (~8) who work collaboratively to produce polished, impactful theatrical performances. Our plays—whether devised or previously produced—explore socially conscious subject matter, threading together historical and contemporary issues through a unique lens. Under the leadership of a faculty sponsor and directing professional, Anjanette Hall, we utilize theatre as a creative outlet for self-expression and cathartic release, cultivating a space for authenticity and openness in our rehearsal room. We also commit to training acting, memorization, and devising skills to grow our artistic practices. 

In the spring of each year, we produce a full-length theatrical performance for an audience of those currently incarcerated at Grafton, as well as community members from outside the prison, family members, and Oberlin College students and staff.

WHAT IS GCI?

A minimum-medium security prison opened in 1988 and spanning 1,396 acres of Grafton, OH. To volunteer at GCI, Obies file paperwork, submit a background check, and attend a training session at the facility to be approved for the “standing gate-pass,” which allows entry during our rehearsal times. OGTC prepares students for volunteer training and for the entry process, including GCI’s dress code and other policies. 

Rehearse weekly during the fall, spring, and winter terms; meet for debriefing and planning; rehearse individually and in groups to memorize parts and review blocking—in order to produce a polished play presented for audiences each spring.

TIMELINE

Applying

During the last two weeks of summer, and the first two weeks of the fall semester, OGTC opens applications for new Oberlin student members. We look to accept underclassmen (exceptions made) with a wide variety of interests, backgrounds, and experience, such as:

• Interdisciplinary and non-theatre artists (visual artists, musicians, writers, etc.)

• Theatre artists (performers, directors, designers, managers, etc.)

• Students with an interest in pedagogy and/or curriculum development

• Students interested in the non-profit field or in community programming

• Individuals with an interest in activism, politics, social reform, etc.

• Many more…

Fall Semester

Once interviewed and accepted, new “Obies” join weekly debrief sessions (~1hr./week), visit GCI for rehearsals on three occasions before training (~4 hrs./session), and attend volunteer training (~4 hrs. one-time). Once added to the standing gate pass, which could be any time between October and December, new Obies continue attending debriefs and rehearsals (~5hrs./week). 

Spring

We might hold additional or extended rehearsals in the spring to prepare for our production. This year, we will have three tech/dress rehearsals (~1 additional hr./week) in late April and will be performing Friday, May 1st and Saturday, May 2nd at 5pm (call time 4pm; ~6 hrs./show). 

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

OGTC encourages longevity within the program. Whenever possible, Obies stay with the program for all four years on campus, building strong relationships with other members of the Collective, developing an in-depth understanding of the inner workings of OGTC, and growing into leadership positions within the Collective.

We are a partner of the Bonner Scholars program. Obies can fulfill some or all of their 140 hours of service with OGTC. Students on Federal Work Study can also receive support from the Bonner Center for volunteering with OGTC.

We are working to compensate all students and incarcerated members of the Collective for their vital, brilliant work.
