Who We Are
America Reads tutors work in Oberlin City Schools classrooms and after school programs. They provide literacy support in a variety of settings, ranging from one-on-one tutoring to general classroom assistance. Activities are usually teacher-directed and include such tasks as reading stories, working on vocabulary, completing assignments, and assisting children with homework. However, America Reads tutors' work often goes beyond the classroom.
What We Do
The Oberlin America Reads Program, based in the Bonner Center for Community-Engaged Learning, Teaching, and Research, is a constituent of the nationwide enterprise designed by President Clinton to ensure that every child will become an independent reader. America Reads places federal work-study in Oberlin elementary schools and community centers to support this initiative. The program aspires to meet the goals of this endeavor and simultaneously foster a healthy, positive relationship with the greater Oberlin community.
